Speeding and Speed Bumps

Most of our members and guests have been very careful when moving around the park in motor vehicles. That is wise because we have many “blind entrances” - walkways and corners where children often don’t take the precautions we would like as they bike, run and play in the park.

Beside my trailer is such a walkway. When I park my car in my designated spot, the walkway is even hidden from drivers.

I have put out “Slow Down” signs and the park has installed two speed bumps in front of my trailer. Most passing by smile and wave, and crawl along, respectfully and safely. Yet there are those special few - park members mostly - that drive far too quickly up and down in front of me, despite these signs, and despite being yelled at to slow down.

I arranged for a well placed rock beside the speed bump to be installed to prevent drivers from simply driving on the grass around the speed bump - because it was happening. At least one member then drove around the rock in between the rock and the sewage pumping station, potentially damaging pipes underneath. So I place my “slow down” sign in that gap.

The park also has had an ongoing problem with the main entrance road, so the park invested in a radar speed sign to inform drivers of their speed.

I guess the point is that slow down measures are reminders but it takes drivers themselves to change their own behaviour and think of the children as they drive around the park. One preventable accident is too many.
